UK fusion machine MAST Upgrade gets 12-tonne double beam box
Engineers at the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) have lowered a 12-tonne double beam box into position at MAST Upgrade on UKAEA's Culham Campus.
The component houses two new neutral beam injectors, which fire high-energy neutral atoms into plasma to raise its temperature. Adding them to the existing setup will double MAST Upgrade's neutral beam heating power from 4.4 MW to 8.8 MW, and is expected to double plasma temperatures from 30 million to 60 million degrees Celsius.
Andrew Thornton, Head of MAST Upgrade Operations at UKAEA, said the higher heating power will let researchers study plasma stability and test how the machine's exhaust system handles hotter, higher-performance plasmas, describing these as crucial questions for STEP, the UK's prototype fusion power plant.
